Since the Middle Age the town of Grasse was known for the bustling activity of leather tanning, which was made though the guild of “Maîtres Gantiers Parfumeurs”. In the XVIII° century there was the evolution from “glove masters” to “perfume masters”, and the small town of Grasse became the capital of the perfume world, because many flowers which were used to extract the essence grew naturally in the area: tuberose, mimosa, narcissus and rose. Although the jasmine was originally from Asia, it perfectly adapted to Grasse climate, and gave birth to a precious and demanded variety that has been used until now by most refined perfumer makers. In 1841 the chemist Molinard opened up his shop in Grasse, where he sold perfumed waters and cologne of his own production. In 1861 Queen Victoria of England visited Grasse and became a regular customer. In 1900 Molinard built his new headquarter with the cooperation of Gustave Eiffel. In 1921 Molinard launched Habanita, an extraordinary and incomparable fragrance. In 1930 he worked with with the great “glass masters” like Lalique and Baccarat that produced for his company gorgeous crystal bottles. In 1949 Molinard turned 100 years and the old headquarter was transformed into Perfumery Museum, where until today you can admire the old crystal bottles which contain the most famous creations. |
